Some things are given because they are appropriate, or practical, and can be devoid of emotion on the part of the giver - which can be quite liberating for the receiver, who need not feel any obligation greater than thanks or appreciation.
If something is given with intense emotional onus, there may be expectations by the giver of the receiver, which the receiver may be unaware or unwilling to make.
If the intention of the gift is misconstrued, a similarly inappropriate intention may be expected or interpreted.
